Dutch Dancing the Next Fitness Craze? The Tulip Time Festival Invites Everyone to Join the Dance!

The first flakes have flown – winter is fast approaching. This is the time of year people are looking for ways to get up off the couch and exercise. Over the years, we have been presented with a number of fitness fads -- everything from Jazzercise, to Zumba, Biggest Loser and even Belly Dancing, so why not Dutch Dancing?

Believe it or not, Dutch Dancing is a great workout. Tina Vande Guchte, the Fitness Program Coordinator at Holland Hospital explains, “Dutch Dancing has some great health benefits. The 20-minute dance routines provide a total body workout. It’s great for your cardio-vascular
system.” Other health benefits expressed by Vande Guchte include the fact that Dutch Dancing is a weight-bearing exercise and therefore aids in the prevention of osteoporosis.

Vande Guchte offers some advise for dancers to help avoid injury such as muscle strains and shin splints, “Because Dutch Dancing can be intense, it’s important that dancers ease into highimpact steps, and take the time for a proper 3 to 5 minute warm up beforehand, and a good stretch of the major muscles afterwards.”

So, why not Join the Dance! The Community Dutch Dancing informational meeting will be held on Wednesday, November 16th at 7:00 p.m. in the Tulip Time Festival’s Community meeting room at their new location, 74 West 8th Street, in Holland.
