TULIP TIME ANNOUNCES 2007 GRAND MARSHALS
HOLLAND, MI – Wednesday, May 2, 2007. – Every year the Tulip Time Festival (www.tuliptime.com) honors a select group of individuals who have stood out in the community. These individuals are named Grand Marshal’s for the 3-themed parades held during the week of the Tulip Time Festival.
Beginning with Wednesday’s Volksparade, Tulip Time honors the Holland Police Department on their 100th year anniversary. The Holland Police Department was created on May 21, 1907. The first police department staff consisted of Police Chief Fred Kamferbeek, five officers and one bicycle as a mode of transportation. Interestingly enough six officers policed the first Tulip Time Festival in 1926. A small office and jail cell was located in the fire building on the corner of 10th & River. After City Hall was built in 1910 the police department was located on the first floor. The police department has seen three police buildings. The first built on 8th street in 1932, the second at the same location in 1972 and the third built on the corner of 8th & Pine in 2004. The current staff consists of 62 sworn officers, 13 civilians, 45 reserve officers and 16 victim advocates.
Thursday’s Kinderparade will honor with the presence of Lynn Dykstra. Lynn received her BA from Illinois State University, a Reading Specialist Certification from National College, an MA from University of Alabama, Birmingham and an Administrative Certification from Grand Valley State University. Lynn has taught in New Jersey, Illinois and Alabama before she became a Holland resident. She has lived in Holland for the past 26 years and has taught at Washington Elementary School for 8 years before becoming principal at both Harrington Elementary and Holland Heights. She retired from Holland Public in July of 2006. Lynn currently works for the state as a behavior and reading consultant, which is grant funded and services over 200 schools across Michigan. In her spare time, Lynn enjoys anything connected with the water, reading, biking, walking, time with friends and family especially with her new grandson.
