Tulip Time, LAUP Partner for Tulip Time Fireworks

HOLLAND, Mich. – Tulip Time has partnered with West Michigan’s Latin Americans United for Progress (LAUP) to bring about this year’s annual end-of-festival fireworks, Saturday, May 13 at Kollen Park.

Although this is a new pairing for the Tulip Time fireworks, it is not the first time Tulip Time and LAUP have partnered together. “Tulip Time has collaborated with LAUP in previous years with the Fiesta celebration in May,” said Gwen Auwerda, Executive Director of Tulip Time. “Following the remodeling of the Civic Center, we have been exploring new ways to collaborate again. The Fireworks seemed like the perfect place to partner together with LAUP managing the entertainers and food vendors prior to the fireworks at Kollen Park.”

Johnny Rodriguez, Executive Director of Holland-based LAUP explained that “Tulip Time is an important and prominent part of the Holland community. People from all over the state, region, and world travel to Holland for this beautiful spring festival. We felt that it was important to partner with Tulip Time to connect Holland’s Latino community to the festival so that a truly equitable and diverse Tulip Time can be brought together.”

Each year, thousands of spectators swarm downtown’s Kollen Park to view the beautiful annual firework display that caps off the week of parades, activities, and Dutch dancing. “I like to think of the fireworks as a ‘bright’ ending to a wonderful week of celebration in the community,” said Auwerda. “Kind of a ‘take-back-the-town’ celebration as most tourists have returned home.”

For Rodriguez, “The fireworks show at the end of Tulip Time festival is more than just a beautiful spectacle. It symbolizes the unity between LAUP and Tulip Time, two organizations dedicated to making a positive impact in our community.”

Food and entertainment begin at 5:30 pm on Saturday, May 13th at Kollen Park. LAUP has organized musical acts from DJ Two 3, the LAUP Salserines and Grupo Supernova. LAUP will also be providing children’s activities and a bounce house as well as food vendors Dolce Mini Cakes, Los Mariscos De Pancho, Hotbox Tacos, Outlaw Roasted Corn, La Michoacana, Jhomary’s Paradise and Mi Favorita.

LAUP is a human service organization that advocates for the welfare of marginalized populations within the West Michigan area. Through services, programs, and events, LAUP has helped create a more equitable and diverse community for Holland and neighboring cities.
